The origin of HMU
Some users link the origin of Hit Me Up with pagers – devices communication devices that were popular in the 90s. Pagers could not receive text messages, but instead beeped and displayed the phone number of the person trying to reach you or “hit you”.
The truth is that the true origin of the abbreviation is unknown. As with many other acronyms, one day HMU just appeared in Urban Dictionary. HMU then became a popular online trend and quickly spread across the internet.

What does HMU mean in the text?
It’s slang usage, so don’t talk like that to your boss or teacher. When you talk to your peers, including at conferences and networking events. You can tell people you want to meet again or collaborate with to reach out to you!
Hitting someone is an open invitation, but it is often very casual. If you end up not reaching out to someone or unfollowing them, that’s to be expected.
When should you use HMU?
Like many Internet slang and expressions, you should only use HMU in informal situations. If someone asks you to meet later somewhere, or wants some other type of interaction, information, or something else for you, it’s simple to use HMU as a means of telling them to contact you about anything when they’re ready.
Really, you can be quite creative with HMU. It’s all about telling people you want to talk to them or telling others that someone wants to talk to you. It’s one of those phrases that can be used almost indefinitely, in general.
